Job Description:

The Senior Manager, Bridges and Structures (B&S) – Western Region Strategic Bridge Initiative (SBI)/ Climate is responsible for overseeing SBI projects for delivery and focus on CN’s response to climate change in hardening the Company’s bridge and culvert infrastructure. The incumbent oversees the design, schedule, and budget of projects while coordinating with in-house departments and third parties, as well as permitting, which is critical to successful delivery. The position advances the organization’s response to global climate change impacts on the Company’s infrastructure, including prioritizing risk exposure for infrastructure. The incumbent evaluates new technologies for application and assesses services employed currently for weather-related risks. The position collaborates with universities and research institutes for applicable research and studies to benefit CN’s assets. The role coordinates with the Regional Senior Manager, B&S for response to out-of-service emergency conditions, ensuring senior leadership is present and covering the B&S response. The position works with other sectors of Engineering, and CN Operations, and Transportation teams to ensure advantage of work blocks and production schedules are utilized by B&S. The incumbent assesses project safety plans, site assessments, and in situ evaluation of processes for safety conformance when in the field.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Direct field staff and contractors when on site
  • Negotiate work scope and oversee design consultants in preparation of bid packages
  • Collaborate with Senior Manager, B&S -Western Region on schedule and implement projects
  • Advance Engineering design for programmed bridges
  • Engage in the construction and oversight of bridge projects, including being responsible for scope, schedule, and budget
  • Perform hazard assessments and safety reviews when on site
  • Negotiate change orders and collaboration of work blocks for contractors
  • Engage in safety audits and crew development as available
  • Assess the risk profile of assets in the Western Region and prioritize hardening of assets
  • Research product development and experimental programs for application to the organization’s system
  • Coordinate with regional task forces to maximize effectiveness of investments and ensure efforts are not in conflict with other agency work being undertaken
  • Network within the industry to identify products and technical expertise that can be beneficial to CN’s response to changing conditions
  • Evaluate data to form solution and applications to current challenges
  • Assist in predictive modeling
  • Engage with Transport Canada as required
  • Support Senior Manager, B&S Western Region for vacation and personal schedules
  • Engage with university and industry research to raise optimum ideas to the Company for implementation
  • Respond to natural disaster and out of service conditions as required

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word), as well as PDF

Qualification & Experience:

  • Experience in bridge design
  • Experience in interpretation, preparation, and enforcement of construction as well as procurement contracts
  • Professional Engineer Certification (P.eng.)
  • Experience in estimation and cost control of bridge construction and maintenance projects
  • Fall Protection Certification
  • Experience in emergency response and collaborating to restore service to the railway
  • Experience in drainage and water management*
  • Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in bridge construction design, management, and assessment
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Experience in collaborating on research and applying concepts to practical solutions
